Downtown Porto Vecchio

The town of Porto Vecchio, or Portivechju, was historically built on this small rocky promontory overlooking the wide gulf and marshes. The fortifications were built by the Genoese in the 16th century.
But the town's history was not an easy one: battered by barbarian invasions and decimated by malaria, it was abandoned and rebuilt several times.
In 1769, when Corsica became French, the citadel regained its military importance and took on its current name: the Bastion de France.

Inside the "upper town", you'll find a wide range of shops offering island craftsmanship, as well as renowned local designers, original productions and all the stores you need for your vacation.
Of course, the narrow streets of the old town and the central square in front of the church of Saint Jean Baptiste offer a wide variety of bars and restaurants.

The marina

Porto Vecchio's marina is the most visible landmark for all newcomers to the town.
Porto Vecchio's marina is the perfect place to come and enjoy the "passing of time" at one of the bars, ice cream parlors or restaurants facing the harbor.

The marina is also the place to be for lovers of beautiful boats and yachts of all kinds, which are very common in Porto Vecchio in summer.

Last but not least, the port is the departure point for several sea excursion companies, offering trips to discover the gulf, the famous beaches, the Cerbicales islands and, of course, the Lavezzi Islands and the Bonifacio region to the south.

The festive city

The town of Porto Vecchio is well known for its festive evenings, both in the lower part of the town around the marina, and in the alleys around the citadel.

Porto Vecchio is also internationally renowned for its Via Notte club and all the other establishments that liven up the warm summer nights.

Porto Vecchio's beaches

The beaches on the north shore of the Gulf of Porto Vecchio can be reached in just a few minutes from the hotel.
Cala Rossa beach is easily reached on foot.
The Porto Vecchio region is also famous for its southern beaches, whose names conjure up images of crystal-clear water, red rocks and pine trees (almost) falling into the sea. The beaches of Santa Giulia and Palombaggia are just 30 minutes from the hotel (by car).

Sports in Porto Vecchio

Porto Vecchio offers a wide range of sporting activities for a very active vacation. On the beaches of the gulf, you can practice water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing or paddleboarding.
It's also a great place for scuba diving for all levels and ages. On land, a wide range of sporting activities are on offer in summer for children and adults alike. Accrobranche (tree climbing), horseback riding, children's playgrounds, etc. are just some of the activities on offer.

Not to mention all the possibilities in the hinterland.

The Porto Vecchio region is incomparably rich in Corsica.

Archaeological sites

The Porto Vecchio region bears witness to very ancient occupation. There are numerous archaeological remains in the immediate vicinity of the town, but also in all the regions of the far south.
While the finest remains are to be found in the Alta Rocca (Cucuruzzu and Capula), the sites of Ceccia and Tappa are both less than 10 minutes' drive from the town center.
But the most emblematic is the site of Araghju (Araggio). Access is from the village of La Trinité. This remarkable prehistoric fortress can be visited (allow 1 hour for the walk there and back, easy but hot in summer).

The salt marshes

The "nickname" of the town of Porto Vecchio is "the city of salt".
This comes from the salt marshes that have long guaranteed the town's economic wealth.
Today undeveloped, Porto Vecchio's salt marshes, located at the head of the bay opposite the commercial port, offer a different face of the town.
They can also be admired from the panorama of the upper town, at the Genoese gate.
